Artemis: Claude Code on a real phone, the step-by-step setup and 3 uses for your business

Artemis, the open source tool published on Google's GitHub, lets Claude Code use a real Android phone. The step-by-step setup, the real costs, the safety rules and 3 copy-paste prompts to convert, acquire and measure.

Claude Code reads your files and writes your code. With Artemis, it also picks up a real phone: it opens apps, taps through screens, fills in fields and hands you the result.

This guide gives you the full setup, then 3 concrete uses to grow your business, with the prompt to paste. Commands taken on November 5, 2026 from the official repo, prices taken the same day from Google's page.

✅What you need
1
An Android phone or an emulator. Artemis only drives Android today: iPhone is on its roadmap, not in the tool yet. If all you have is an iPhone, Android Studio creates a free virtual phone on your computer.
2
A computer with Git. Mac, Linux or Windows. On a Mac, install Homebrew too: the startup script uses it to install ADB, FFmpeg and scrcpy.
3
Claude Code. Check with claude --version.
4
A Gemini API key. Gemini 3.8 Flash, Artemis's default model, has a free tier to get started.

The code lives in the Artemis GitHub repo, and you create your key in Google AI Studio.

Know this before you install
Two models work together. Claude Code talks to you and gives the mission. Artemis runs it with its own agent, which reads the screen and taps, on your Gemini key. Your Claude subscription pays for the first, never the second. Artemis also accepts OpenAI or Anthropic keys, but its base configuration and its precise tap-target detection run on Gemini.
1

Get the phone ready

📱 phone settings
🔓Turn on USB debugging
5
Find the build number. On a Pixel: Settings, About phone, Build number. On a Samsung: Settings, About phone, Software information, Build number.
6
Tap it seven times, until you see the message saying you are now a developer.
7
Turn on USB debugging. Settings, System, Developer options, USB debugging. On some models, the menu sits one level higher.
8
Plug the phone in over USB, unlock it and accept the authorization prompt on the screen.
No Android at hand
In Android Studio, open Device Manager, create a device and start it. Artemis accepts a running emulator like a connected phone.
2

Install Artemis

⬇️ github.com/google/artemis
💻Get the code and create your settings file
git clone https://github.com/google/artemis.git
cd artemis
cp .env.example .env
🔑Add your key
9
Open the .env file in your editor and paste your key after GEMINI_API_KEY=. Never paste it into a conversation.
🚀Run the install
./start.sh
👀What happens next
10
On Windows, in PowerShell, use copy .env.example .env then .\start.bat instead.
11
The script installs what's missing: ADB, FFmpeg, scrcpy and the Python dependencies.
12
Answer n to the MCP configuration question. Y installs Artemis in every supported tool, while the next step connects it to Claude Code alone.
13
The console opens at http://localhost:8000. It walks you through connecting the device and shows its screen live. Check that your phone shows up.
🧪First test, in a second terminal, from the artemis folder
uv run artemis run "Open Settings, find Battery and tell me current level" --profile flash
If something gets stuck
Run uv run artemis doctor: it checks Python, the configuration, your key and the device.
3

Connect it to Claude Code

🔌 MCP server
🔗Still from the artemis folder
uv run artemis mcp --install claude
⚙️What this command does
14
It adds Artemis to Claude Code (in ~/.claude.json) and to Claude Desktop.
15
It installs its rules in ~/.claude/rules/artemis.md, so Claude knows which mode to pick and how to react to an error.
16
Restart Claude Code, then run claude mcp list. You should see artemis in the list.
💬Your first mission from Claude Code
With Artemis, open Settings on my phone, find Battery and tell me the current level.
How it runs
The mission runs in the background. Claude tracks its progress, and a notification pops up on your computer at the end. If something gets stuck, write "Run mobile_diagnose and fix what the report says".
4

Pick Flash or Pro

🎚️ say it in your prompt
⚡
Flash, 3 to 5 seconds per step
For a simple action with a clear path: open, find, read. No plan, no verification, no written report. It's the default mode.
🧠
Pro, 15 to 40 seconds per step
A plan, checks before each action, notes and a verified result at the end. For a long mission or one that needs a detailed report. The 3 uses below run in Pro.
5

Protect your phone and your data

🛡️ read this before your first real mission
🛡️5 rules
17
Use a spare phone or an emulator. The agent taps the screen like you do: on your everyday phone, every app you're logged into is within its reach. On a personal phone, set ARTEMIS_HELPER_AUTO_INSTALL and ARTEMIS_KEEP_DEVICE_AWAKE to false in .env.
18
Know what gets installed. A small accessibility service, "Artemis test helper", visible in your notifications and under Settings, Accessibility. According to the repo, it listens only on the phone and sends nothing elsewhere. To remove it: uv run artemis helper uninstall.
19
Know what the model sees. Screenshots go to the model provider. On the free tier, Google may use them to improve its products; on the paid tier, it doesn't. As soon as an app shows customer data, turn on billing. Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through December 31, 2026, then $1.50 and $7.50.
20
Keep your main accounts out of it. Instagram, LinkedIn and WhatsApp restrict automation in their terms of use: never point Artemis at those accounts.
21
Stay in control of money and access. You log into apps yourself, no password ever goes in a prompt, and every prompt says where to stop before a payment or a send.

3 concrete uses for your business

The battery test proves everything works. Here's what pays off: one use to convert, one to acquire, one to measure. Replace what's in brackets, then paste the prompt into Claude Code.

6

Convert: your checkout tested on a real phone

🛒 store, practice, quote-based service
🎯The problem
22
You pay for ads, and your customer lands on a phone. A cookie banner hides the button, a field opens the wrong keyboard, a page drags: from your computer you see none of it, and the sale walks away.
💬The prompt
With Artemis in Pro mode, on my phone:
Open Chrome and go to [YOUR PAGE URL].
Act like a customer coming from an ad who wants to [BUY / BOOK / REQUEST A QUOTE].
Go through to the last step with this test data: [NAME, EMAIL, PHONE].
Stop before the final button: don't pay, don't send anything.
On each screen, note what hides a button, what loads slowly and what's painful to fill in.
Give me the list of problems, from the one costing the most sales to the least, with a screenshot for each.
What you get
A ranked list of fixes, with the proof on screen. If your site's code is in your project, ask Claude Code to fix them, then rerun the same test.
7

Acquire: your spot on Google Maps

📍 restaurant, clinic, agency, local business
🎯The problem
23
Your next customer looks for you on their phone. They type your trade and their city into Google Maps, then call one of the first listings. You want to know where you show up, and what the listings above you have that you don't.
💬The prompt
With Artemis in Pro mode, on my phone:
Open Google Maps and search for [YOUR TRADE + YOUR CITY].
Note the first 10 results, in order: name, rating, number of reviews.
Tell me what position [YOUR BUSINESS NAME] holds.
Open the top 3 listings and note what they have that I don't: photos, opening hours, replies to reviews, booking button.
Read only: don't call anyone, don't leave a review, don't change anything.
Give me a table, then the 3 changes to make to my listing this week.
What you get
Your position, the gap with the leaders and 3 actions for the week. Rerun the same prompt every Monday: your position becomes a number you track.
8

Measure: the numbers stuck in an app

📊 point of sale, delivery, booking
🎯The problem
24
Some numbers only live on a phone. A point-of-sale, delivery or booking app with no export: nobody copies them out, so nobody tracks them. That's where a real phone makes the difference.
💬The prompt
With Artemis in Pro mode, on my phone:
Lock the mission to the [APP NAME] app, where I'm already logged in.
Go to last week's summary.
Read [REVENUE, NUMBER OF ORDERS, AVERAGE RATING].
Read only: don't change anything, don't confirm anything, don't send any message.
When you're done, add a dated row to weekly-tracking.csv and compare with the week before.
What you get
A tracking file that fills itself and a comparison every week. These screens show your numbers: use Gemini's paid tier. Once the path is found, ask Claude Code to turn it into a script: it replays without going back through the model.

Where to start

Run the battery test, then run use 1 on your own page. You'll see what your customer sees on their phone, and what your computer was hiding from you.
