The Cold Outreach Play That Actually Gets Replies (the PDF that talks about your prospect)

The cold outreach play for SEO freelancers: send your prospect proof they're invisible in AI answers while their competitor gets cited. The exact DM script and the report to reproduce.

You send forty cold DMs and get zero replies. The problem isn't your pitch. It's that your message talks about you: your offer, your experience, your results. The prospect doesn't care.

This play flips it: instead of talking about you, you send proof that talks about them.

The proof is a short report showing that their brand is invisible in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, while their direct competitor gets recommended by name. Nobody ignores a document about their own brand. Here's the full play, with the exact DM script and the report to reproduce.

🧰What you need
1
One dream client. Not a list of fifty. One.
2
A way to generate the proof. An AI visibility report on their brand and their competitors (method in step 2).
3
Ten minutes and two lines of message. The play fits in that, the report does the rest.

The play is three steps. Each one matters, don't skip the first.

1

Step 1: pick one dream client

🎯 your prospect list

The instinct is to blast fifty contacts at once. That's exactly what kills the play. It works because it's personalized proof, a report about THEIR brand. You can't personalize fifty reports back to back with the same care.

Pick the client you'd genuinely love to land, the one whose logo you want on your site. One report, one DM, one real shot. You repeat the play prospect by prospect, never in a batch.

Keep this
One hyper-personalized report about a brand beats fifty generic messages. The scarce thing here is personalization, not volume.
2

Step 2: generate the proof

πŸ“„ Namedrop, 3 min

The proof is a report that shows one thing, brutally: their brand doesn't come up in AI answers, their competitor does.

πŸ“„The 3 things the report must prove
4
The gap. On questions their customers actually type ("best [category] in [city]"), their brand doesn't appear in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, or Claude answers.
5
The competitor that wins. On those same questions, a direct competitor gets cited, sometimes recommended by name. Name them in the report. That's what stings.
6
The number. A simple score (say 6 citations out of 12 possible for the competitor, 0 for them) so the gap is undeniable, not a vibe.

Generating this report by hand is an hour of copy-pasting prompts and screenshots, prospect after prospect.

Keep this
The shovel is the PDF. You never sell the tool to the prospect, you send them the result.

Step 3: send the DM

βœ‰οΈ LinkedIn, email, DM

Now the message. Short. Two lines and the PDF. It's the report that talks, not you.

The first message, with the report as a link or attachment:

Hi [first name],

I ran a quick check on [their brand]'s visibility in AI answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity). Your competitor [competitor] shows up, you don't. I put the details in this report.

If it's useful, I'll show you in 15 minutes how to flip it.

The follow-up, three days later if they haven't replied:

Hi [first name], did you get a chance to look at the report?

The biggest gap is [main gap], and it's also the fastest to fix. Want me to walk you through it?

When they reply "yes, send the details": you don't send back a wall of text, you offer the slot. The proof did its job, your job now is to book the call.

Keep this
The message doesn't sell your service, it opens a conversation about a problem the prospect just discovered about themselves. You sell the service on the call, not in the DM.

What the report you send looks like

Here's the structure of a report that converts, on a fictional example (an aesthetic clinic). Reproduce this skeleton whatever your prospect's industry:

πŸ“‰
Overall score
41/100. The brand is cited 0 times out of 12 queries, its competitor 6 times. The gap in one number.
πŸ€–
Per-AI breakdown
The score model by model (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude): where the competitor shows up, where the gap is total.
🎯
The named competitor
On "best aesthetic clinic in [city]", the AI recommends [competitor] by name. The prospect's brand is nowhere.
πŸ› οΈ
3 actions
For each gap: the precise action (the page, the heading), the quantified impact, and what the competitor does that the prospect doesn't.

One last reflex on the score: don't count as a point the questions that already contain the brand name ("alternatives to [their brand]"). Self-citation there is mechanical, it inflates the number and a sharp prospect will spot it. Keep the generic questions, the ones where the competitor genuinely wins.

Why it works

A classic DM asks the prospect to care about you. This one shows them a gap on their own brand, with the name of the competitor beating them. You don't create the need, you reveal it. That's the difference between an ignored message and a conversation that starts.

Reproduce this structure prospect by prospect. It's an outreach asset almost no freelancer sends, because they keep talking about themselves. You talk about them.
