You don't need to write your skill anymore, you can just show it

Until now, creating a Claude Skill meant describing your task in words. Describing it well, with a precise trigger and instructions in the right order. Since July 21, there is a second, faster path: you do the task once in front of your screen, you explain what you're doing out loud, and Claude watches. Zero writing, zero prompt to polish.

This article covers both methods: the manual 5-step method (the one from the Instagram carousel) and Record a Skill, Claude Cowork's new feature that turns a screen recording into a reusable skill.

What a Claude Skill actually is

A skill is a procedure you never want to re-explain in every conversation. One file, SKILL.md, with a name, a short description, and instructions. Claude reads the description of every available skill at the start of a conversation. The moment a task matches, it loads the full file and follows the instructions, no reminder needed from you.

Discovery. Claude scans the name and description of every skill at start-up, just enough to know if one might be relevant.

Activation. A matching task triggers the full SKILL.md file to load into context.

Execution. Claude follows the instructions, runs any bundled scripts, and loads any bundled files.

Where it lives

Once created, a skill fires in every future conversation, Claude.ai and Claude Code alike, as long as the trigger matches. You build it once, you never retype it again.

This is the method behind the carousel: you start from a prompt you already use, and turn it into a permanent skill.

Start from a prompt you already reuse. No need to start from scratch. Hand it to Claude and ask: "Turn this prompt into a Claude Skill, keep the instructions, write a short trigger description." Claude writes the whole SKILL.md file in one reply.

Write a trigger Claude can't miss. Claude only reads the description to decide when to load a skill. "Helps with writing" never fires. "Use this skill when I ask for an Instagram caption" fires every time. Name the exact task, the exact platform, the exact moment it should trigger.

One skill, one job. A skill that tries to cover three use cases ends up firing for none of them. If your description has an "and" in it, split it into two separate skills.

Upload it as a zip. Settings → Capabilities → Skills, upload your zipped folder. It takes ten seconds, and the skill is live in every new conversation, no restart needed.

Test it blind. Never name the skill to check it works. Ask for the task normally, as if the skill didn't exist. If it doesn't fire, the description is still too vague, go back to step 2.

The classic trap

Nearly every skill that never fires has the same problem: a description that's too generic. "Helps me write" loses against any other skill on the list. Be as precise as a job title, not a general mission.

Anthropic shipped this feature on July 21, 2026, available to Pro, Max, and Team accounts, inside the Claude desktop app's Cowork tab. The idea flips how you create a skill entirely: instead of describing it, you demonstrate it.

🎬How it works

Open Cowork in the desktop app. Click the + in the message box, then Record a Skill (under the same menu as "Add files or photos").

Hit record and do the task normally. Your screen gets captured while you work. Narrate out loud what you're doing and why, like you're training someone sitting behind you.

Stop the recording. Claude analyses the video and the audio, and synthesises the whole thing into an executable skill, with its own instructions written from what it observed.

Review, tweak if needed, save. The generated skill replays exactly like a hand-written one, including via the zip-upload method above if you want to share it elsewhere.

This method removes prompt engineering and manual documentation entirely: you demonstrate a workflow once, Claude learns it. It's the shortcut for tasks where describing every step in words would take longer than just doing them.

Where it stops

Record a Skill requires the Claude desktop app (not Claude.ai in the browser, not Claude Code). For a purely text-based task with no interface to show, the manual method is still faster.
