Why Your Competitor Shows Up in ChatGPT and You Don't (and How to Check It in 10 Minutes)
Your competitor gets cited in ChatGPT's answers, you don't. The checklist to test the three reasons (sources, structure, entity) on your own brand in ten minutes, and know what to fix first.

Your competitor keeps showing up in ChatGPT's answers. You don't. It's not luck, it's not ad budget, and it's not because their product is better. In almost every case, it comes down to three things only: sources, structure, and entity.
One of those three is almost always your real gap, and until you know which one, you're fixing at random. This checklist walks you through testing all three on your own brand, by hand, in ten minutes flat. No account to create, no paid tool. By the end, you know exactly where you're losing the citation, and in what order to fix it.

Join the Lab βThe starting test (3 minutes)
Run your three questions through the four AIs, one after another. For each answer, you don't read, you log. Five things, nothing more:
Sources: are you on the pages AIs copy from
ChatGPT and Perplexity don't pull their answers out of thin air. They lean on a short list of trusted pages they reuse over and over: Reddit, Wikipedia, review sites, comparison roundups, and industry listicles. If those pages talk about your competitor and never about you, the AI has no reason to surface you.
Structure: is your content easy to quote
An AI copies what's easy to copy. A page that answers a question directly, with a question-style heading and a clean comparison block, gets quoted. A page where the answer is buried under three paragraphs of storytelling does not.
Entity: does the model know who you are
To an AI, your brand is an entity it has to recognize as one and the same thing everywhere: consistent name, reviews, mentions, aligned profiles. If you show up under three slightly different names, with no reviews and a half-empty profile, the model won't connect the dots, stays vague, or mixes you up with someone else.
Fix it in this order
Now that you know where your gap is, fix it in this exact order: sources first, structure next, entity last. The reason is simple. Getting cited on the right pages puts you in the answers right away, while entity work pays off over weeks. You take the fast win first, the rest follows.
Run this diagnostic by hand for one brand and it's ten minutes. For thirty prospects in your pipeline, it's your whole week gone.
Namedrop runs this diagnostic for you: it scans your visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google, and Claude, and shows you which sources cite your competitor and not you, in three minutes.
Try Namedrop βRun the full test once a month on your own brand. AI visibility moves fast, and what got you cited in June can be gone by September.
