Turn any YouTube video into a personal coach

In 5 minutes, turn a YouTube video into an interactive learning app with NotebookLM and Gemini. You ask questions, get clear explanations, and get quizzed. Active learning, not passive.

You watch a YouTube video to learn something. You nod along, it feels clear, and three days later almost nothing is left. It is not you, it is the format: watching a video is passive learning, and you retain about 10% of it.

Retention does not depend on how good the video is, it depends on what you do with it.

The trick: turn the video into a small app that explains the topic, lets you ask your questions, and quizzes you at the end. You go from spectator to player. Two free Google tools are enough, NotebookLM and Gemini, and it takes five minutes.

What you need
1
A Google account. NotebookLM and Gemini are free.
2
A YouTube video on a topic you genuinely want to learn.
3
Five minutes. Plus the time to actually watch the video, of course.
1

Copy the YouTube video link

▶️ youtube.com

Pick a video on the topic you want to master: a tutorial, a talk, a deep explainer. The denser it is, the bigger the payoff. Just copy its URL from the address bar or the Share button.

2

Create a notebook in NotebookLM

4
Open NotebookLM and create a new notebook.
5
Paste the video link as a source. NotebookLM pulls the transcript and turns it into a usable knowledge base.
Why this step
NotebookLM turns a video (a format you sit through, start to finish) into a structured source an AI can query, cite, and reorganize. That is what makes the next step possible.
3

Generate your learning app in Gemini

6
Open Gemini and add the notebook you just created as a source.
7
Paste the prompt below.
8
Gemini builds your app with Canvas: you can ask questions, get clear explanations, and get quizzed at the end.
Build me an application from the attached NoteBook that teaches me this topic. Use Canvas as the design tool. The app should let me ask questions, get clear explanations, and quiz me at the end.
What you get
A custom app, built only from the content of your video, that actively teaches you instead of letting you scroll. The end-of-session questions force you to recall, and that is exactly what moves retention from 10% to 75%.

Run it on everything

The real power is repetition. A skill to pick up, a fuzzy concept, a two-hour talk: every time, the same loop, video, notebook, app. You build yourself a library of personal coaches, one per topic.

Stop watching videos. Start practicing them.
